Our history is one of dedication to the community.
In 1906, The Municipal Cemetery, Fawkner (as we were then called) opened to meet the needs of the city’s flourishing north west. The cemetery was designed and run by Charles Heath, a surveyor and architect.
The first burial took place on 10 December 1906. This was considered to be the unofficial opening of the cemetery. Her name was Dorothy Gladys Knapp, aged 4 years, 11 months. The Funeral was conducted by John Allison from Sydney Road. Gladys actually died on 19 August, four months earlier. Her body was kept in storage at Richmond until the cemetery opened.
Flagstaff Hill was the site of the first Melbourne burials in 1836. In 1837, burials from here were relocated to the current Queen Vic Market site – known then as Melbourne Cemetery. In 1922, over 220 graves from the Melbourne Cemetery were transferred to Fawkner Crematorium & Memorial Park – establishing our Old Pioneers Section. In this mass move, the grave and remains of John Batman’s was transferred here. Frederick William Craig – the oldest grave transferred – died in 1837 aged 18 months. His was the second burial in the old Melbourne Cemetery.
In 1907 our young cemetery became The New Melbourne General Cemetery.
Located on the outward bound train line, funerals accessed the cemetery by one of six specially designed mortuary trains. In a time when hearses were drawn by horses and crowds were transported by carriage, this was an innovative and practical approach.
The Mortuary Train operated from 1906 to 1939. It consisted of one 1st Class carriage, two 2nd Class carriages, one guard van and a mortuary carriage. The coffin was placed in the louvered door compartment. Floral tributes would go into the adjoining compartment.
After finding a discarded and dilapidated mortuary carriage on land in Meredith, it was fully restored and placed on display next to our Tea Rooms. Over 2000 hours of labour went into restoring the carriage.
Today we are still accessible by rail with the Fawkner Railway Station located with our grounds, adjacent to our main office.
Built in 1926, our original crematorium was the first modern complex in Victoria to include a chapel for services as well as cremation facilities in the same venue. It was Built for ₤ 7,000. In 1980 this original building was replaced with a new Chapel and Crematorium Complex, consisting of three non denominational chapels and computerised cremators. We have roughly 3,000 cremations a year. Equipment and technology of world class standards enable Fawkner Crematorium & Memorial Park to guarantee same-day, individualised cremation services.
In 1971, by an Act of Parliament, our name changed to Fawkner Crematorium & Memorial Park. Originally established under the trusteeship of local mayors and councilors, the Park passed into the management of an independent Trust in 1971. Today the board of Trustees consists of six prominent business and civic leaders who manage the facility in accordance with the Cemeteries and Crematoria Act 2003.
We have expanded as the north-west has grown. The most recent land acquisition occurred in 1994, stretching the grounds as far as the Western Ring Road, nearly doubling our size.
Australia’s first public Mausoleum opened at Fawkner in 1994., the Holy Family Mausoleum. Private Mausolea have also been constructed on our site – providing families with a grand memorial.
Today we provide thousands of spaces for above ground entombment with a further stage currently under development. Our Holy Archangels Mausoleum blends the most contemporary design with an age-old practice. Designed and constructed by some of the world’s foremost specialists, the first two stages, Chapels of the Archangel Michael and Raphael, offer nearly 4,000 spaces. Stage three, the Chapel of Gabriel, is scheduled for completion in 2007. Once complete, this will be Australia’s largest Mausoleum complex.
Fawkner Crematorium & Memorial Park is completely autonomous and, while non-profit making, must generate funds for ongoing maintenance and future development. As managers of one of the largest and most diverse cemeteries in Australia, the Trustees control assets of over $200 million.
On an average weekday, approximately 20 funeral services are conducted. This equates to well over 5,000 services per year, more than half of which involve cremation. With our client service focus, we now have many services being conducted on weekends or out of regular hours.
Every year more than two million visitors pass through our gates.
